Obamacare Health Insurance 2027: What’s Changing and How to Enroll Without Surprises

If you have Obamacare health insurance, or you’re thinking about getting it for your family, this year it’s not a good idea to let your plan renew automatically. For 2027, several rules are changing that affect how much help you get, who can receive it, and what happens with your taxes if your income changes. In this article, we explain in simple words what’s changing, the key dates in Florida, and what you can do now to enroll without surprises.

Key Dates in Florida

In Florida, open enrollment for Obamacare health insurance for 2027 runs from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Florida uses HealthCare.gov, the official federal government site for enrollment.

  • If you enroll or change your plan by December 15, 2026, your coverage starts on January 1, 2027.
  • If you enroll between December 16 and January 15, your coverage starts on February 1, 2027.
  • After January 15, you can only enroll if you have a special event, like losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby.

Important note: In 2025, the federal government tried to shorten the enrollment period, but a federal court blocked that change for 2026 and the dates remain until January 15. The government appealed the decision, so we recommend confirming the dates on HealthCare.gov before you start. The safest option is not to wait until the last minute: enroll before December 15.

Change 1: Extra Help Ended and the Income Limit Is Back

Since 2021, the government provided extra help to pay for insurance, known as enhanced credits. That extra help ended on December 31, 2025. The House of Representatives approved an extension on January 8, 2026, but the Senate hasn’t voted yet, so it’s not law as of today.

What does this mean for you in 2027?

  • The 400 percent federal poverty level limit is back. If your household income for the year goes over that limit, you don’t qualify for help to pay for insurance.
  • If your income is below that limit, you can generally still get help, though it may be less than in previous years.
  • Many families will see their monthly payment change in their renewal notice. That’s why it’s so important to review your plan before it renews automatically.

If Congress approves an extension before or during enrollment, the rules could change again. We’ll keep you updated.

Change 2: No More Cap on Paying Back Advance Help

This change surprises most people. Obamacare health insurance help is almost always received in advance: the government pays it each month to your insurer to lower what you pay. Its official name is premium tax credit (APTC). When you file taxes, the IRS compares the help you received with what you actually qualified for based on your real income for the year.

Before, if you received too much, there was a cap on how much you had to pay back. Starting with the 2026 tax year, that cap is gone: if your income ends up higher than you estimated, you could have to pay back all of the extra help, with no limit, to the IRS. This applies to 2026 plans (filed in 2027) and to 2027 plans and beyond.

This is especially important if you’re self-employed, if your income goes up and down during the year, or if someone in your household changed jobs. The key is your income estimate: the more realistic it is, the less risk you have of a surprise at tax time.

Change 3: Who Can Get Help Based on Immigration Status

Starting January 1, 2027, help to pay for Obamacare health insurance is only available to these groups:

  • Permanent residents (people with a green card).
  • Cuban and Haitian entrants.
  • People from countries with the Compact of Free Association (COFA).

Other people with legal presence, such as refugees and asylees who don’t have a green card yet, people with TPS, and people with work visas, among others, will no longer receive this help starting January 1, 2027, although in some cases they may still be able to buy a plan at full price. Also, since 2026, people with legal presence whose incomes are below 100 percent of the federal poverty level and who don’t qualify for Medicaid due to their immigration status no longer receive help.

If this applies to someone in your household, it’s important to check before enrolling so your family doesn’t end up with a plan you can’t afford or with a debt to the IRS. We help you review both the insurance and tax side; if you have questions about your immigration case, we recommend also consulting a licensed immigration attorney.

Change 4: More Options If You Have a Bronze Plan

Since 2026, bronze and catastrophic Obamacare health insurance plans can be combined with a Health Savings Account (HSA). This account lets you set aside money for medical expenses with tax benefits. If you have or are considering a bronze plan, ask us if it’s a good fit for you.

What to Do Before You Enroll

  • Read your renewal notice: check if your plan is the same, if your insurer is still in your area, and how much you’ll pay.
  • Confirm your doctors and medications are still in the plan’s network.
  • Carefully estimate your 2027 income, including self-employment, overtime, and household changes.
  • Gather documents for each household member: ID and immigration documents, proof of income, and info about your current coverage.
  • If your income changes during the year, update it in your application. Don’t wait until tax time to find out.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Letting your plan renew automatically without reviewing the notice.
  • Estimating your income by guesswork or using your income from two years ago.
  • Forgetting income from self-employment or from another household member.
  • Not reporting family changes, like a baby, marriage, or a child moving out.
  • Assuming the help from previous years will be the same this year.
